Toyota announces a $3.6 billion expansion and 2,000 new jobs at its San Antonio plant, an investment that will allow the assembly of Tacoma vehicles, in addition to Tundra, Sequoia and rear axles.
TMNA will move Tacoma production from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Baja California (TMMBC) to the expanded Toyota Texas plant over a period of approximately four years.
“Toyota’s continued investment in North America is a testament to our confidence in the region’s workforce, innovation and long-term growth potential,” said Ted Ogawa, president and CEO of TMNA. “With the expansion of our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to the American manufacturing sector, creating important and sustainable jobs, while promoting our mission of delivering high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of both current and future customers.”
After a highly competitive process, this expansion highlights Toyota’s commitment to Texas as an essential center of automotive innovation and manufacturing excellence.
“Texas is the birthplace of large-scale manufacturing, and Toyota is reaffirming that belief with a $3.6 billion expansion in San Antonio that will double its factory footprint and create 2,000 new jobs,” said Governor Abbott of Texas. “This Texas-sized investment reflects the strength of our workforce and the unprecedented business advantages found only in our state. With support from the Texas Enterprise Fund and the JETI program, this expansion will provide economic opportunity to generations of San Antonio families and further establish Texas as a premier world-class advanced manufacturing destination.”
This recent investment will allow another assembly line to be added to the plant in Toyota Texas, which already includes a vehicle assembly line and a new rear axle plant that will begin operations soon.
“We are very proud of the Texas team and their accomplishments over the past two decades,” said Frank Voss, vice president of the truck manufacturing group at TMNA and president of Toyota Texas. “The 2,000 acres of South Texas real estate where our plant currently stands was deliberately selected for its potential to expand in line with vehicle demand, and this date marks the first step in realizing this potential. We are extremely pleased to add the beloved Tacoma to our existing award-winning lineup and want to thank the state of Texas, Bexar County and the city of San Antonio for their long-standing support.”
This expansion brings Toyota’s total investment in San Antonio to $8.3 billion since its founding in 2003. The new center will provide greater flexibility to the plant through advanced manufacturing technologies and will be aligned with Toyota’s broader North American operations. Toyota remains committed to its operations in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and promotes the rapid resolution of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to achieve global competitiveness in the North American region.
“For two decades, Toyota has proven to be a loyal and dedicated partner in this community,” said Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai. “This is the plant’s second major investment in two years. Toyota continues to honor its commitments here and this exciting initiative demonstrates the confidence one of the world’s leading companies has in both the present and the future of Bexar County.”
Toyota’s local workforce will number approximately 6,000 team members, supported by 23 local suppliers and their employees.
“San Antonio is honored to host Toyota and we are pleased to have been selected for the additional expansion,” said San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones. “This is an important recognition of the talent our city offers, as well as the investments our community is willing to make to support Toyota’s growth. We look forward to the expansion of the Toyota family in San Antonio.”
