According to a report by Business Insider, the company notified employees that it is raising its in-office requirement from two days to three days a week for staff assigned to its three main hubs in New York City, San Francisco and Porto in Portugal.

The report says that the announcement was made to remaining staff a day after Patreon laid off 93 employees. A company spokesperson confirmed the shift to the publication, noting that the updated policy will roll out in the coming months and will not affect employees who are already officially classified as remote workers.

Return to office strengthens connection

Patreon refers to its in-office policy internally as “Time Together.” In a statement, the company defended the mandate as a way to improve collaboration following the staff reductions.

“Since returning to two days a week in-office, we’ve been able to build stronger connections across the team. We’re making this change to spend more intentional in-person time together to continue strengthening the feeling of community and togetherness we have at Patreon,” a Patreon spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The move mirrors a broader trend across major tech and media companies seeking to rebuild in-office work culture. Companies like Instagram and TikTok have also pushed stricter attendance policies, with select teams required to be in the office up to five days a week.

Historically, Patreon’s approach to office attendance has been relatively flexible. Former employees noted that the platform required staff to meet a 75% attendance threshold on designated days, allowing workers to miss roughly one out of every four required office days without penalty.

Additionally, several employees living within commuting distance were previously granted remote status, exempting them from attendance rules.

Patreon refocusing under AI and rising competition

The combination of job cuts and stricter office rules comes as Patreon restructures its organisation to move faster. In an internal memo sent to employees, Patreon CEO Jack Conte pointed to technological change and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) as key factors driving the company’s reorganisation.

“AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry, the pace of change has never been more intense, and I expect it to get even faster,” Conte wrote, highlighting that Patreon needs “increased agility” to adapt to market shifts.
