Is Narayana Murthy suggesting that India follow China’s 9-9-6 rule?

Back in 2023, Narayana Murthy had invited criticism for urging the youngsters in India to put in 70 hours of work a week, and contribute to the growth of the Indian economy. His statement had sparked discussions online revolving around long hours, employee health and work-life balance. Looks like Murthy is not willing to let this go. He is now extolling China’s 9-9-6 work model.

As per this model, Chinese tech companies expect their employees to work from 9 in the morning to 9 in the evening for six days a week. That means, employees are expected to put in 72 hours of work every week. About four years ago, this model of work had been banned by the top court of China.

Narayana Murthy, however, favours the model and even suggests during a television interview that it is a model worth following in India. His opinion is that the youth should first work hard to make something of their life before pursuing work-life balance.

He has always maintained that the youth of India must work harder to eradicate poverty. Murthy has urged youngsters and entrepreneurs to stay away from mediocrity, forget about relaxing and focus on working harder to create more jobs so that people have disposable incomes. Only then will the country earn respect in the world.
