Early life
Menon studied in a boarding school from the age of six, as his father worked in Djibouti, East Africa. “I had a very broad cultural exposure and a good context about the country. I used to travel by plane on my own as a six-year-old child as an unaccompanied minor. I changed a lot of schools from nursery to class 12. I was born in Bombay and did my schooling till class 2nd there. My class 3rd was in Africa, 4th & 5th were in Bangalore, 6th & 7th were in Kerala, 8th & 9th were in Pune, 10th & 11th were in Chennai, and 12th was in Kota. I was also the school captain in my class 11th and class 12th!” he says.
“Even in the firms I worked for, I was the first person they would ship if they wanted someone to go to locations, be it Calcutta or Rajasthan. It is very easy for me to strike a relationship with people of literally any state. I like to learn new languages, and I like to understand them better,” he adds.
Commenting on his frequent school changes, Menon shares, “My dad was working all by himself in Djibouti in a new environment. English wasn’t even the primary language there. He was also from Kerala and moved to this place. I think he knew French and Arabic more than he knew English. My mother was a school teacher, and she was working with the American Embassy. We understood that if my mother went and lived with him, it would be much easier for my dad to manage.”
“Most often, my parents would want to come back to India and settle down in a city, but they just couldn’t figure out which city was the best to kind of settle in at that time. But in that process, I would just keep getting moved across India. It wasn’t just the changing cities and schools, even my board was changing, from the State Board to CBSE, to ICSE,” he says.
“During the summer vacations, my mother would sit next to me, write my notes, and teach me a lot of stuff. My first semester exams would be absolute bangers, and I would get nothing less than 90 per cent. But the second semester would be an absolute disaster. Again, I look at it in a positive light, where I feel that it made me more independent,” Menon adds.
Menon further says, “I was very adaptable as a child. I could have created a big scene, and could have started crying, saying ‘I want my parents back. I can’t live without them, etc.’ But something in me also understood that I shouldn’t do that. He has gone there to build his career and make a name for himself, and earn money so that we can have good lives. Maybe, because of all these experiences as a child, I was able to make friends faster. I was able to be comfortable in an unknown setup. Even if you throw me in a jungle and ask me to survive there, I will survive!”
Unwinding
According to Menon, the mind and the body have a crucial role to play. “I try my best to give attention to both those aspects. I play sports. I like watching football. If time permits, I go and watch a lot of concerts, be it performing arts or music. My creative side is more tuned to that. Also, I enjoy going to the gym every day to stay fit,” he says.
“I enjoy traveling and meeting different kinds of people in different countries. I would have easily been to about 18 countries. I had the advantage because my parents were living abroad. Because of that, I had the opportunity to see a lot of the world with them. I enjoyed traveling so much that I took it even in my adult life, like once a year, I would explore a new place,” he adds.
Recently, Menon did scuba diving in Thailand during the extended weekend. “I was actually there for a vacation, and scuba diving was not even on my mind. I thought about that one morning when I woke up. I called up a few scuba diving places, and they gave me the details about the package. I just went there and did it. I dived like 20 to 30 metres under the ocean. And I assure you that under water is the most beautiful place in the world,” he says.
“Now, I am thinking of taking up an instructor course for sure someday! I’ll keep doing stuff like this whenever I miss flying. What’s life anyway without any adventures or challenges? I can continue working on PowerPoint or an Excel sheet any day. But life is much more than that. Every human has a child-like side to them. Every person should ask themselves what their inner child wants,” he adds.
Menon further goes on, “Have you heard of Silverback gorillas? They’re amazing creatures who are extremely intelligent. The thing is, you have to be a very submissive person when you are with them. There has been an ongoing debate for a long time on social media about ‘100 men versus a Silverback gorilla: Who will survive?’ It would be an enriching experience to meet a Silverback gorilla. My next adventure is that!”
