No time to rest or even sleep, an exhausted and anxious Reddit user posted about the unfair demands made by his employer. The user, who is a senior software developer, was apparently told by his employer to put in 20 hours of additional time at work every week to self-learn courses if he wanted to get promoted to a tech lead position!
The exhausted techie posted about the toll this extra time has taken on him, and he is not even getting paid for the three extra hours he is putting in every day. According to his post, he is barely able to sleep or even pause to breathe properly. Why? Because his company has made it quite clear that this is what he would have to do if he really wished to see his career advancing!
The techie’s post also revealed that his doctor had asked him to refrain from taking on stress since he was suffering from a heavy chest and other symptoms that could indicate heart issues. However, the techie had not revealed his health issues at work fearing dismissal. Also, since he does not have any other offer in hand he wasn’t ready to put in his resignation either.
Many users were found empathising with the helpless techie and advising him to walk away from such a stressful workplace or speak up about his issues. Others advised him to request the employer to let him set aside some time during official work hours for self-learning or else start looking for another job.
Yet others cautioned him against ignoring anxiety and chest heaviness as these could indicate a serious cardiac ailment. Users advised the techie to not let others use him in such an unfair manner.
