Sands China Extends ‘Impact Week’ Reach, Bringing NBA Legend and Coaches to School

It was a valuable platform for teachers and students to gain insights from international basketball elites, while giving an NBA legend and coaches a firsthand look at the talent and potential of Macao’s young athletes. The event underscores Sands China’s long-standing commitment to the Macao community and its dedication to fostering a positive, inclusive and caring society. By bringing the impact of a premier international sporting event to the local community, the company aims to inspire positive youth development through this meaningful initiative.

School Day brought together around 600 participants, including Mitch Richmond and NBA coaches and management, alongside teachers and students from Yuet Wah College and Colégio Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah), senior management from Sands China, and the Sands Cares Ambassadors.

During the event, Mitch Richmond and NBA coaches led a dedicated basketball clinic for members of the boys’ basketball teams from Yuet Wah College and Colégio Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah), who each won their division’s championship in this year’s Inter-School Basketball Competition in Macao. Through hands-on guidance and skills demonstrations, the basketball clinic provided precious learning opportunities for the students, inspiring and encouraging them in their pursuit of excellence.

Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd.said: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Macao SAR government and various sectors of society for their long-standing support of our community initiatives, with special thanks to Yuet Wah College for arranging this initiative. These collective efforts provided a valuable opportunity for Macao’s youth to learn from world-class sports elites. We are delighted to extend the impact of this international sporting event to a local school through School Day, leveraging the power of sports to nurture talent and foster cross-cultural exchange. This initiative not only provided young basketball players with an opportunity to enhance their basketball skills through close interactions with an NBA legend and coaches, but also inspired them to learn from the perseverance and pursuit of excellence that define world-class athletes. Today’s event exemplifies Sands Cares’ commitment to serving the community, fostering youth development, cultural exchange, and stronger social cohesion through meaningful engagement.

“Looking ahead, Sands China will continue to support the Macao SAR government’s ‘Tourism+’ policy –– by drawing on international events in Macao to create more opportunities for the local community and younger generation to connect with the world and broaden their horizons, while showcasing Macao’s unique appeal as a diverse and inclusive city on the global stage.

Ng Teng Kuong, principal of Yuet Wah Collegesaid: “We are pleased to join hands with Sands China and NBA Cares to bring this meaningful campus activity to our students. The initiative provided members of our basketball team and fellow students with an invaluable opportunity to learn from an international basketball star, encouraging them to embrace a positive mindset both on and off the court. Through School Day, we brought the positive impact of an international sporting event into our school and the wider community, providing students with a unique opportunity to enhance their basketball skills, engage with world-class athletes, and expand their horizons. We sincerely thank Sands China and the NBA for their care and commitment to Macao’s youth. Looking ahead, we will continue to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders across different sectors, creating more opportunities for students to engage with the wider world and unlock their full potential.”

Beyond basketball exchange, the event featured meaningful cultural interactions. Students from Colégio Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah) delivered an electrifying freestyle rope-skipping performance on-site, showcasing the energy and diverse talents of Macao’s youth. Accompanied by teachers and students at the school, NBA legend Mitch Richmond participated in a Chinese calligraphy session, learning firsthand the techniques of brushwork and ink application while gaining a deeper appreciation of the richness of Chinese culture. The experience fostered cultural exchange between East and West.

To further extend the positive impact, Sands China and the NBA donated basketballs and training equipment to Yuet Wah College, while establishing a new “Basketball Corner” on campus. Featuring a basketball-themed design, the space integrates areas for reading, social interaction and recreation, aiming to enrich students’ campus life and extracurricular experiences while fostering a positive sporting culture.

School Day ended on a warm and cheerful note as students were presented with goodie bags assembled during the Impact Week’s Tip-Off Day, conveying care and well wishes while encouraging them to pursue their dreams and challenge themselves to reach new heights.

Guests attending the School Day event included: Kathy Behrens, president of social responsibility and player programs of NBA; Wayne Chang, managing director of NBA Asia; NBA legend Mitch Richmond; Ng Teng Kuong, principal of Yuet Wah College; Iu Pek Fong, principal of Colégio Dom Bosco (Yuet Wah); Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd.; and Hubert Wang, chief operating officer of Sands China Ltd.

The “NBA Cares x Sands Cares Community Impact Week 2026” is taking place over five consecutive days, Oct. 7-11, featuring a diverse programme of activities focused on youth development, healthy living and community inclusion. Current NBA players and legends will engage with communities across Macao, with the initiative seeking to extend the impact of the NBA sporting event into the community and enable more Macao residents to experience the positive energy and excitement generated by the world-class basketball event.

The fourth event of Community Impact Week, Health and Wellness Day, will take place tomorrow (Oct. 10) at the Fuhong Society of Macau’s Happy Kitchen Social Enterprise. During the event, an NBA legend, Sands China senior management, and Sands Cares Ambassadors will assemble and distribute boxed lunches to people in need in Macao, extending care and support to the local community.
